Pre-Lenten carnivals are celebrated in many places around the world, from Trinidad to Rio de Janeiro to New Orleans' famed Mardi Gras.
But Venice claims to have the oldest carnival tradition, with laws establishing the holiday dating back to the 13th century.

This year, the Venice carnival -- known for elaborate masks and costumes -- takes place Feb. 17-28.

Events include masked balls, music and dance performances, gondola parades, formal dinners and children's celebrations.

The battle for Italian fest supremacy is heating up.
The city of Venice has taken the first step toward securing private financing for a new Palazzo del Cinema for the Venice Film Festival.

The building would rival Rome's Renzo Piano-designed auditorium, which is to host the Eternal City's first film festival, Cinema, in October -- and could be crucial to the Venice fest's survival.

Mayor Massimo Cacciari inked a complex agreement that will allow the city to sell off the Ospedale del Mare hospital compound on the Lido to hotel and real estate developers, with the proviso that at least E100 million ($120 million) of that coin be used to build a futuristic palazzo within the fest grounds.

The Czech Republic's low-cost carrier Smart Wings will start a service between Prague and Venice in June.

The airline will operate four flights a week between Prague and the Italian town as of June 1, it said in a statement.

SN Brussels Airlines lowers its fares to 32 destinations for customers who book their ticket at least 2 months before the departure date. Price reductions up to 45 pct will be implemented. With this new pricing strategy, SN targets mainly the early bookers.

It is time to revive the venerable but largely forgotten tradition of beginning the evening with a light, bubbly champagne cocktail.
Champagne can be mixed with just about any fruit, juice or liqueur imaginable but we found our favorites to be the classics. Among them were the Bellini, Kir Royale and a Champagne cocktail. What we love about these drinks is that they are bright and festive and appealing to even those who don’t favor champagne.
The Bellini was first served at Harry’s Bar of Venice some time in the 1930s and was officially named in 1948. There are very strict rules that apply to the preparation of a proper Bellini.

It goes like this: cold Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) and cold white peach puree are shaken together in the proportion of three parts wine to one part peach puree. The mixture is then poured into a well-chilled highball glass until the glass is full and there is1/4 inch of foam on top. Delicious and impractical.

There is also a version made with strawberry puree called a Rossini. The good news about all of this ceremony is that we found it can be abandoned without diminishing the end result.

When in season it is a great idea to make your own fruit puree. However, this time of year, we had difficulty finding sweet ripe fruit but frozen ripe strawberries or peaches worked just fine.

Bellini ingredients
2/3 cup white peach puree
1 teaspoon raspberry puree
1 bottle chilled Prosecco, Asti Spumante Brut or other Italian sparkling dry white-wine

Directions
In the bottom of each flute or white-wine glass, pour about 1 1/2 tablespoons peach purée and add 2 or 3 drops of raspberry purée. Pour an equal amount of the wine into each glass and serve immediately.

VENICE, Italy — Sir Elton John and David Furnish are honeymooning in Venice after tying the knot in a civil union ceremony in Britain last week, Italian news reports said.
The couple took a water taxi to St. Mark's Square, lunched at Harry's Bar and shopped in the romantic canal city, the ANSA news agency and the Venice daily The New Venice and Mestre reported Saturday.

ANSA said John and Furnish arrived Thursday and were staying at John's home on Giudecca, one of the islands of Venice's lagoon.

The English pop star and Canadian filmmaker, together for 12 years, exchanged vows and diamond wedding bands Wednesday during the first week of legalized civil unions in the United Kingdom.
